Overview: A team of researchers led by the Spanish National Research Council presents the map of the genomic diversity of SARS-Cov-2 in the first wave of the epidemic
A team of researchers led by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has published the map of the genomic diversity of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, during the first three months of the epidemic (February to April), that is, the period known as the first wave.
The study has observed that the genomic diversity of the coronavirus in Spain is unique in Europe, and closer to the genotypes of the virus circulating in Asia between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. This fact is consistent with the early introduction of the virus in the country, especially from the second half of February 2020, and with a very rapid expansion to the entire national territory by the end of February.

SeqCovid-Spain consortium has collected samples of the virus genome from 30 hospitals throughout Spain.

As a result, Spain is now the second country in Europe with the most samples of the virus genome collected, and the fourth in the world, with a total of 4,244 sequences
