03 February 2021 – New antibody test for COVID-19

Type of Intervention: Specific Action
Sectors Involved: Research and Development
Level of Jurisdiction: National
Lead People/Agency: Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)

Overview: A new antibody test for covid-19 achieves greater sensitivity by relying on the complete spike protein
Overview:
A team led by CSIC has developed an ultrasensitive covid-19 antibody test that is based on the complete spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, which is what allows entry into human cells. Other antibody tests use only part of this protein. By being based on the whole protein, the test achieves a reliability of almost 99%. Therefore, only a drop of blood is needed to analyze the sample and the result is ready in just 24 hours. The work, which is funded by the CSIC, is published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. The system will be ready for commercialization in the middle of the month.
