30 March 2020 – Fast-tracked permits for gene therapy research into COVID-19

Intervention Categories: Legal and policy; Regulatory change; Research and development
Level of Jurisdiction: National

Overview: The Dutch Government has fast-tracked the process of issuing licences or permits to researchers who currently use gene therapy in developing drugs or vaccines for COVID-19. All research into gene therapy and genetically modified organisms in the Netherlands must be approved by the Government, and obtain a permit that is usually issued within 56 days. The new measure allows permits to be issued within 28 days instead. The aim is to accelerate the development of a vaccine to combat COVID-19, and allow researchers to start clinical trials much earlier. The measure will be in force for one year and can be extended once for a maximum of one year if necessary.
