Overview: Nicaragua breaches its obligation to report cases and deaths from COVID-19, says PAHO.
On the 19th of May, 2020, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) complained that Nicaragua has breached its obligation to report cases and deaths from COVID-19, and recalled that a better response to the pandemic requires knowing the situation in the country.
PAHO Director of Health Emergencies, Cairo Ugarte, said that the government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua was not fulfilling its responsibility to report on the impact of the new coronavirus, as stipulated in the International Health Regulations (IHR) of which Nicaragua is a signatory. Up until May 12, officially Nicaragua only reported a total of 25 confirmed cases and 8 deaths from COVID-19. However, independent medical and scientific organizations have gathered information from health care personnel and family of the sick patients, revealing that the situation is much worse than officially admitted.
