15 March 2020 – Travel restrictions, stringent screening measures and ban on international events

Lead People/Agency: The Hon. Prime Minister, Hon.Voreqe Bainimarama is the person leading the implementation of the intervention, and he made the decision on this intervention.

Overview: The intervention involved the restriction of people travelling overseas, especially in Italy, Iran, South Korea and mainland China. Intervention were also around the banning of cruise ships from berthing anywhere in Fiji and also local events were closed to all guests coming in from overseas. The purpose of the intervention was to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Prime Minister highly discourage all Fijians from travelling overseas and this involves the ministers, civil servants, Permanent Secretaries and staff of statutory bodies (barring exceptionally critical circumstances).
He later emphasized important preventative measures for COVID-19, such as washing hands and breaking the habit of shaking hands, hugging and drinking kave using the same cup/bowl.The government will need to work closely with hotels and tourism partners to help identify, isolate and treat any visitors who may be experiencing symptoms of the virus.
