29 February 2020 – Kurdistan closes borders and limits tourism, Erbil suspends Nowruz celebrations

Overview: Regional Interior Minister of Kurdistan confirmed the limitation on tourists entering the region. The Rojava border (Syria) was to be closed starting from 01 March 2020 until further notice.

The Nowruz celebration was suspended by the Erbil provincial government and the local businesses and governmental bodies were advised to to postpone any event and gathering. Iraqi Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shi’a cleric in Iraq has called on protesters to stop gathering and requested to suspend religious gatherings until further notice.
