Overview: The U.S. Congress allowed postponements (forbearance) on mortgage payments for federally backed loans for up to 60 days under phase 3 legislation. Postponements can be extended for additional 30 day periods four more times. The legislation bans the foreclosure process until at least mid-May 2020 and any fees or penalties for delayed payments. Landlords may not evict tenants for failing to pay rent for a 120-day period.
