13 April 2020 – Exemption for quarantined individuals who have minor requiring medical care

Type of Intervention: Executive Order, Specific Action
Sectors Involved: Civil Defence
Intervention Categories: Individual measures; Surveillance and response measures; Tracing and quarantining contacts; Legal and policy; Regulatory change
Level of Jurisdiction: Alberta
Lead People/Agency: Chief Medical Officer of Health

Overview: This intervention allows persons who are isolated or quarantined to take minor children in for scheduled medical care when the care can only be provided in a doctor’s office, hospital or other medical facility and when there is no other legal guardian or parent able to accompany the children. The person must advise the medical facility that they are in quarantine or isolation and follow all instructions provided by the staff. A mask covering the nose and mouth shall be worn upon arrival at the medical facility. The person must travel directly to and from the medical facility and use private transportation (if possible). If using public transportation, physical distancing must be maintained and a face mask must be worn. If a minor requires emergency medical care (that requires first responder assistance), the parent in quarantine/isolation must inform 911 and any first responders that there are in quarantine or isolation. At the hospital, an asymptomatic parent/guardian must wear a face covering and maintain physical distancing. A symptomatic parent/guardian must be admitted to the hospital with the minor, and the two shall remain in isolation at the hospital until the minor is discharged. This intervention aims to ensure children receive appropriate medical care even when a parent or guardian is in quarantine or isolation.
