10 April 2020 – Restricting staff movement among health care facilities

Type of Intervention: Executive Order, Regulation
Sectors Involved: Health
Intervention Categories: Social and physical distancing measures; Special populations
Level of Jurisdiction: Alberta
Lead People/Agency: Chief Medical Officer of Health

Overview: Order 10-2020: This intervention is aimed at operators and service providers of health care facilities in Alberta. It prevents staff from working at more than one site (for staff of hospitals, nursing homes and designated supportive living accommodations). The order also adds additional precautions to the operational protocols and outbreak standards for suspected, probable and confirmed outbreaks (for hospitals, nursing homes, supportive living accommodations, lodge accommodations and facilities providing residential addiction treatment). In particular, the order specifies continuous masking (wearing a mask at all times) in these facilities as well as conducting daily self-checks of residents for symptoms of COVID-19. Additionally, all new admissions or transfers must be placed on contact and droplet precautions for 14 days from the date of arrival to the facility. This intervention aims to protect individuals over the age of 60 as well as those with pre-existing health conditions that may increase their risk for severe symptoms from COVID-19 infection.
