20 March 2020 – Limited border-crossings to selected border crossing points

Intervention Categories: International travel measures
Level of Jurisdiction: National

Overview: From 20 March, crossing at the borders with Austria, France, Luxembourg, Denmark and Switzerland has been possible only at certain border crossing points.

The Federal Minister of the Interior asks all citizens to refrain from travel that is not absolutely necessary. Travellers without an urgent reason for travelling may in principle no longer enter or leave the country at the internal borders with Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg and Denmark. This also applies to travellers with symptoms that could indicate COVID-19.

Cross-border travel for urgent reasons, return journeys of citizens to their country of origin transiting through Germany, and the cross-border movement of goods and cross-border travel for professional reasons remains permissible, irrespective of nationality.
