16 March 2020 – Government declares state of national emergency, closes borders to foreigners and suspends lessons in all educational centres

Overview: State of national emergency declared. On March 16, the Government declares a state of national emergency throughout the national territory. Borders closed to all non- Costa Rican, this prevents foreigners from entering the country until April 12, only nationals and residents may enter. In addition, schools and universities close. Lessons have been suspended in all educational centers of the country from March 17 to April 13. Everyone returning from overseas must self-isolate for 14 days.
