30 May 2020 – China donates test kits and PPE to assist Fiji’s efforts in containing COVID-19

Lead People/Agency: The Hon. Prime Minister is the person making decisions on all related issues regarding COVID 19. In this case, it is a donation by the Government of China to Fiji, and Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister Yogesh Karan expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for all the support provided to complement Fiji’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overview: The intervention involved the donation of the government of China to Fiji. Target audience are mainly the health sectors and local government. The intention of this intervention is to assist Fiji in containing COVID 19, strengthening relations between Fiji and China and to assist Fiji in future if another wave of the virus reaches our shore. This donation is intended to help Fiji contain COVID-19 (assistance have been secured through the Consulate General of the Republic of Fiji in Shanghai).
Assistance consists of 20,000 COVID-19 test kits and 50,000 face masks. Other donors involved are from the Fiji-Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, the Macao-Fiji Chamber of Commerce and a number of Chinese investors.
Dr. Yolinda Chan said ““the situation in Fiji is currently under control. However, as Fiji prepares to re-open its borders and with anticipation of a possible second wave of the pandemic, we must remain vigilant and be prepared”.
